Video Game Preferences & Game Development Insight Questions

1. Personal Gaming Preferences

●     What are your top three favorite video games of all time, and why? My top three favorite games of all time would have to be the Persona Series, Total War Series, and Pokémon. I know these are all quite different from each other, but they all had charms that I really appreciated.

●     What aspects of those games make them stand out to you (e.g., story, gameplay, mechanics, art style, etc.)?Persona had the story I really liked and combat was interesting, while Total War is nothing but combat and makes me feel more tactical with what I do. Pokémon on the other hand is just a favorite of mine since I was a kid and played every single game, even though I don’t think it compares to the first two it has the nostalgia that keeps me coming back.

●     What genres do you typically gravitate towards, and what keeps you coming back? RPGs, Monster Tamers, and Tactical Games have always kept my attention.

2. Comparison to the Game Being Made

●     How do your favorite games relate to the game we are developing? None of them quite line up with what I’m making, but I would be open to trying to make a game similar to my favorites once I get more confident and familiar with making games.

●     Are there any specific mechanics or design choices from those games that you’d like to see in ours? For the games I’m working on and the games that are my favorite, not this time! In the future it will probably be more likely.

●     What elements from those games do you think wouldn’t work well in our game? The strategic complexity would not work in my games very well as I don’t think I could implement them to either make sense for the game or feel satisfying.

3. Strengths & Weaknesses of Favorite Games

●     What are the biggest pros of each of your favorite games? What did they do exceptionally well? The pros I talked about in the aspects I liked best as those are the main reasons I feel the games succeed.

●     What are the biggest cons or frustrations you’ve experienced in those games? Sometimes in the first two games it can be challenging but I wouldn’t say that is a con as it just means it a hurdle to overcome. Feels very satisfying when you do.

●     If you could improve one thing in each of those games, what would it be? I think they are good how they are :]

4. Expectations & Player Experience

●     What do you hope players will get out of playing our game? I hope that they will be able to have an enjoyable experience!

●     What kind of emotions or experiences do you want them to have? That would be different for each game, for Chaos Classroom I’d want them to get excited at seeing their build come together. With Disco of Desire I would want them to get a chuckle out of the silly dialogue. For my horror game I would want them to get spooked or startled.

●     If our game could be compared to one of your favorites, which one would it be and why? None

●     What’s something unique you think our game could bring to the industry? It won’t be the prettiest games nor will it have the most insane gameplay, but they were all made by students with a passion for games with a tight time restriction. I think showing them as passion projects would help them be unique.
